Marathon of the North
Date
6 May 2012
Location
Marathon of the North
Details: Athletics chiefs are already giving the thumbs up to the new Marathon of the North, almost five months before it makes its debut in Sunderland.
One of only two city road marathons in the North of England, the new event has attracted stronger than anticipated entries from clubs and the general public alike, with numbers already in excess of the 1,000 mark.
The marathon will be part of a weekend of running based activities that will include junior events and the second running of the Sunderland City 10k.
Many clubs have responded positively to the weekend’s Club Challenge which is now incorporating the marathon, offering competing teams the chance to win a £500 first prize for investment back into their club, in addition to a number of other runners up prizes.
The competition requires each club to enter at least one athlete into the junior runs, in addition to four runners in the 10k, with at least one woman, and one runner in the Marathon of the North. The club that records the lowest cumulative time for all six runners will claim the title.
In addition to the team competition, clubs will also be able to access their own dedicated ‘chill out’ area at the start and finish point at Sunderland AFC’s Stadium of Light, and a ‘pasta party’ and musical concert the night before the race will be sure to help create a carnival atmosphere!
Entry price is £33 for club runners and £35 for non club runners.
