Badminton star Tracey Hallam retires

Tracey Hallam, the 33-year old badminton star from Burton-on-Trent has decided it’s time to hang up her racket and look back over her fantastic and successful career.

Tracey Hallam’s achievements include taking gold at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006, winning two English National singles titles and five International titles. In her 10 years of elite playing she climbed to No7 in the world and made 81 English appearances.

Tracey said: “Since the Olympics in Beijing I have had chance to take stock and I think now is the right time to stop. I have a lot of happy memories, particularly winning my first English National title by finally beating my great rival Julia Mann and then winning the Commonwealth gold medal.”

The British badminton squad will sorely miss her, she not only helped them win the bronze medal at the Sudirman Cup world mixed team championships in Glasgow in 2007, but she fought back from a career threatening injury to do so.

England head coach Ian Wright said: “We are sorry to lose Tracey. She has led the way in women’s singles for the last eight years. She has been a credit to the sport. She will be a hard player to replace but it has been a pleasure working with her.”
