Victory Day Hellespont Swim

When: 28th- 31st August 2010

Where: Hellespont, Turkey

Details: The Hellespont (aka the Dardanelles) is arguably the most illustrious open water swim in the world. Each year the annual Hellespont race is organised to commemorate the final battle in the Turkish War of Independence in 1922.

Not only is the Hellespont swim famous in line with the Turkish War of Independence, but also follows the route that Lord Byron took in 1810, when he became the first known person to cross it. He was inspired to swim across the waters separating Europe and Asia, by the Greek Myth of Leander, who would swim this 4 ½ kilometre stretch of water nightly to see his lover, the priestess Hero.

The event is open to all swimmers (freestyle or breaststroke) and the distance is approximately 4.5km, and is tidal assisted making the swim nearer 3.5km.

More info: Limited number of places. For details on how to book visit www.swimtrek.com
