Byron Swim Festival

When: 1st – 3rd May 2010

Where: Hellespont, Turkey

Details: On 3rd May, 1810, the English poet, Lord Byron became the first known person to cross the Hellespont (aka the Dardanelles) which is most arguably, the most illustrious open water swim in the world.

He was inspired to swim across the waters separating Europe and Asia, by the Greek Myth of Leander, who would swim this 4 ½ kilometre stretch of water nightly to see his lover, the priestess Hero.

To commemorate this inaugural crossing, a once in a lifetime Byron Swim festival is begin organised by SwimTrek, to follow in his wake exactly 200 years to the day. The festival will feature seminars and films, culminating in the opportunity to swim across the Hellespont on the exact bicentennial date (3rd May 2010) with the heir apparent The Hon. Charles Byron leading the re-creation of his ancestor’s crossing.

The event is open to all swimmers (freestyle or breaststroke) and the distance is approximately 4.5km, and is tidal assisted making the swim nearer 3.5km.

More info: Only 200 places available. Cost £450 excluding flights. For details on how to book visit www.swimhellespont.com
