Hi
Can anyone offer me some advisc on picking a shoe for cross country races. I really struggled with spikes last season and was in agony with cramp in one of my legs (i have no feeling in the toes on one foot - dont think this helped).
I was looking for some trail shoes or fell running shoes instead but there are so many on the market. I dont want to spend too much incase it turns out that its not my footwear causing the problems, i am just rubbish at cross country.
Thanks
Maz
Hi Maz,
It woudl be quite unusual to use anythign other than spikes to do cross country, i can’t recall having ever seen anyone in anything else. Spikes do have a lot less cushionin than other kinds of trainer so this could be part of the problem.
I agree making sure you are fully warmed up is key, and if this isn’t making any difference try getting a new pair, go to a specialist store where they will be able to reccommend a pair that has extra padding.
Hope that helps!
Hi Mazzbo,
I can give you some advice on cramping and how to avoid it.
Cramp is basically an involuntary contraction of the muscles, which can go from being a twinge to excruciating pain! The best way to avoid is too keep hydrated and too make sure you warm up properly.
Lack of sodium, or salt is also argued to be a cause of cramp. So, contrary to the norm I would advise adding some salt to your food the day before race day. Sports drinks are good for this as they hydrate you and replenish sodium levels.
Another thing is to make sure your shoes and clothing fit properly. Clothing or shoes that are too tight can quickly lead to cramp because the muscles are already restricted.
I hope that helps.
Katie
