Sportsister launches ‘Have Your Say’

At Sportsister we are often called on to comment about the political issues surrounding women’s sport, most recently and inevitably, during the BBC SPOTY awards nominations. And comment we happily do.

We set up Sportsister four years ago specifically to make a difference in the world of women’s sport. To report on our amazing female athletes and to show women of all abilities that sport and an active lifestyle is something they too can enjoy.

We, rather than rant and rave about the situation, decided to put our money where our mouth was, and now, here we are with a fantastic fan base, sitting at the very heart of women’s sport in the UK and beyond. This is why we are more than happy to have the chance to comment – four years ago no-one would have listened, but now they do and now is the time to say it.

So, next we want to hear from you - we are giving you the chance to use Sportsister as a platform to air your views. It can be a global matter, a nationwide problem or simply something that’s personal to you – but it must be about women’s sport and it has to be relevant to our readers.

What sort of things could you write about? Me, I have several bugbears aside from the paltry media coverage of women sports. I happen to think the proposals to force women to wear skirts in boxing and badminton events, in an attempt to sex-up these sports are quite frankly ridiculous and misguided.

I also hate women’s magazines that offer empty promises of shaping up in less than a week. I hate them because I believe they are damaging and failing to encourage women into a sustainable and healthy active lifestyle, they sell quick fixes that don’t work and end up putting more women off being active. I also hate that big brands continue to support them through paid advertising…

I fume at the lack of coverage of so called minority sports – maybe they wouldn’t be so ‘minority’ if they received even a fraction of the coverage of sports like men’s football.

There are also however, many things to celebrate. Women’s sport has come a long way since I was a competitor twenty years ago and I could weep with joy at the amazing results of our Olympic athletes.

I am also thrilled to be able to promote some amazing events aimed at all levels of ability – events that celebrate and promote sport as a fun and social thing to do. Events that give more women the chance to take part and enjoy the many benefits that being active brings.

So, if you want to have your say – be it a rant or a celebration, now is your chance. Click here for the guidelines on how to get involved, I can’t wait to hear from you!
