Breeze: getting women cycling

So it’s 1 year and counting and I’ve just about got over my Olympic sulk of a) not getting any tickets and b) finding out that Box Hill is going to be shut to non-competitors during the Olympics so we can’t go up there and watch. grrr… anyway, not my main point of the day.

The Olympics are meant to create a legacy and one of the many plans for ongoing change is in the form of the Breeze cycle network, developed by British Cycling as part of their plan to get more us off the sofa and onto a saddle.

www.goskyride.com/breeze

Led by women for women, you can find a Breeze bike ride in your area using their ’search’ engine on the website. These rides are designed to encourage new cyclists. Informal, short and traffic free they’re perfect for any ladies who are keen to explore what it’s like to get back in the saddle even if it’s something they haven’t done for years and years!

Another great cycle blog for classy female cyclists

This is one fish in a very large pond of online cycling babble so I do like to give note when I come across something that I think is a bit special. ”Love Handles - The Bike Boutique” is definitely not for the lycra clad masses, it’s a shop selling vintage and new bikes and accessories . Their blog is style a plenty, from whimsical Pashley riding style to hard edged East End riders.

Luv Handles

Apparently the girl who runs the shop and site is called Mercedes Bell, which pretty much says it all.

The Bicycle Library

The Bicycle Library, ‘a mobile library advocating cycling in the city’.

This is, as far as I can know, a totally novel concept. A place where you can rent bike, rather than books, a try-before-you-buy place for all things bike. The library has been moving around London for a few months now and is currently located in the East - Netil Market, Westgate Street, E8 3RL.

Upon visiting the library service you can use the skills of their ‘bicycle match making service’ to find your perfect match. Take a bicycle out, as you would a book - there are 7 types - one for every day of the week?

    • Folding
    • MiniVelo
    • FixGearSingleSpeed (FGSS)
    • LadiesCoaster
    • MensCoaster
    • Cargo
    • Electric

And after a try you can always buy. Dangerous ground for those of us with a bit of a cycle habit. Is there any harm in taking a look though I wonder?
