Women’s sports news round-up – Oct 30

Wales took an emphatic 15-0 win against Scotland in the first of the Autumn Rugby internationals. In football, Manchester City finished the season top of FAWSL1 and Chelsea secured a third Champions League spot, England Netball finish fourth in the Fast5 finals and the GB Ice Hockey team chase historic Winter Olympic slot.


Rugby: Wales win on Cardiff return
Wales beat a Scotland XV 15-0 first game back in Cardiff, but both teams will take positives away from the game. Although Wales were deserved winners, the Scotland XV showed progress in a non-capped international today. The hosts scored three tries to claim a 15-0 victory in front of vocal home support in damp conditions at Cardiff Arms Park. Football: Manchester City finish unbeaten in FAWSL1
Captain Steph Houghton is targeting more trophies at Manchester City after a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City saw them finish their FA Women’s Super League 1 season unbeaten. The champions needed extra time to beat the Blues in the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup final earlier this month and were held over 90 minutes again on Sunday. Full story via the BBC

Football: Chelsea secure Champions League spot
Chelsea secured a spot in the Women’s Champions League for the third successive season after beating Reading to clinch second place in WSL 1. Eniola Aluko put the Blues ahead with a flicked header from a corner. Ana Borges rounded keeper Mary Earps for Chelsea’s second before Lauren Bruton pulled one back from the spot after she was fouled by Niamh Fahey. Aluko added the Blues’ third from close range, with Melissa Fletcher making it 3-2 in stoppage time. Full story via the BBC

Cricket: England Women’s squad named for Sri Lanka tour
Fran Wilson returns for the four-match ODI series but Anya Shrubsole misses out due to injury. Heather Knight will lead a 15-strong England women’s touring party in Colombo next month when her side takes on Sri Lanka in the closing round of the ICC Women’s Championship. Full story via the ECB

Winter Olympics 2018: Great Britain begin qualification bid in Kazakhstan
The Great Britain ice hockey team will start their bid to reach their first Winter Olympics at a qualifying event in Astana, Kazakhstan. They will face Kazakhstan, Poland and Mexico from 3 to 6 November as they look to reach the next qualifying stage for Pyeongchang 2018. Full story via the BBC

Netball: England Fives finish fourth on Fast5 Finals Day in Melbourne
The England Fives put up a battling display but were ultimately undone in their quest for the Fast5 title on Finals Day in Melbourne. Instead Tracey Neville’s team had to settle for fourth place as they lost out to the Malawi Queens in the bronze medal match. The tournament ended on a high for the Fives though, as sharp-shooting Joanne Harten was named MVP at the closing ceremony. Full story via SkySports
