This weeks highlights include success for the Downie sisters at the European Gymnastics Championships, a 7-0 win for the England Football team over Serbia and a 9th win for Rachel Atherton at the Fort William Downhill Mountain Biking World Cup.
Gymnastics: Downie sisters win gold and silver as well as team silver at Europeans
Becky Downie secured gold on the uneven bars, while her younger sister Ellie claimed two silvers on the vault and floor. Becky Downie beat Russian world champion Daria Spiridonova by 0.034 points with a score of 15.5, to fill her with confidence ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
In the team competition, Becky and Ellie together with Claudia Fragapane, Gabby Jupp and Ruby Harrold, took a silver medal, matching the medal they won at the 2014 Championship with a final score of 170.312 points. Full story via TeamGB
Football: England beat Serbia 7-0 in Euro qualifier
Karen Carney scored a hat-trick as England put the spring back into their European Championship qualifying campaign with an easy win over Serbia. Full story via BBC
Athletics: Laura Muir starts the season with a win in the 800m
Scotland’s Laura Muir declared herself “very happy” after starting her season with an 800m victory - a meeting record - in Montbeliard, France. The 23-year-old, who hopes to challenge for an Olympic medal in Rio, ran two minutes, 00.57 seconds, just 15 hundredths off her personal best. Full story via the BBC
Mountain Biking: Rachel Atherton wins 9th victory at Fort William
Britain’s Rachel Atherton extended her run of UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup wins to nine with victory at Fort William. The world champion’s triumph sees her overall lead in the series grow to 190 points over fellow Brit Manon Carpenter, who was third behind Tracey Hannah in Scotland. Full story via British Cycling
Wheelchair Tennis: Jordanne Whiley wins French Open with Yui Kamiji
Whiley won her seventh slam doubles title alongside Kuneida’s compatriot Yui Kamiji as they defeated Dutch top seeds Jiske Griffioen and Aniek Van Koot 6-3 4-6 10-6. Full story via the BBC
