Want to keep training all winter long? Keep it stress free by following our safety tips:

  1. Don’t listen to music if you are cycling or running, especially in the dark. You need to be aware of what’s going on around you whether it’s other runners, cyclist or cars.
  2. Don’t run the same route, at the same time, every week. Mix it up. It’s unlikely you’ll meet any unsavoury characters, but there’s no point pretending they don’t exist!
  3. Let someone know your route. If possible, let someone know what route you are taking and how long you are likely to be (this is important at anytime of year).
  4. Don’t just rely on your phone GPS, cold weather saps the battery and you could find yourself stuck, not knowing the route home. Check a map and get basic landmarks before you head off.
  5. Be seen – please don’t run in all black with no reflective or high-vis elements, it’s just plain stupid and with so much cool kit around there’s no excuse.
