Tried and tested: Merrell All Out Terra Trail

October 27, 2015

Autumn is well and truly here and the trails are getting muddy, slippery and tricky, perfect timing then to test the new Merrell All Out Terra Trail. Designed with a deep traction sole and high-cuff inner sock, it tackles the tough stuff with ease.

Good Points:

  • Despite looking pretty solid and chunky, these shoes are actually really light with great foot feel. If you’re looking for a minimal style shoe the heel drop is 6mm (The heel in most conventional running shoes is 12mm higher than the forefoot.)
  • The Vibram sole with 6mm lugs is incredibly effective in very muddy conditions.
  • The inner sock with high cuff works really well to keep debris out – I tested these on several very muddy trail runs and my local parkrun and had clean socks each time!

Bad points:

  • At £100, they are at the more expensive end of the spectrum.
  • It’s not really a bad point but you do need to choose the right socks because of the high ankle cuff, it’s not a big deal, but worth trying a couple of different pairs to get the most compatible fit.
