Weekly Women’s Sports Digest – August 31

England women came from 2-0 down to beat the Netherlands on penalties and win the EuroHockey Championship for the first time in 24 years. Goalkeeper Maddie Hinch was the hero, not only keeping her side in the game for much of normal time but also pulling off three saves in the penalty shootout to help England lift the trophy.
They had trailed 2-0 as the Dutch world and Olympic champions appeared en route to winning in front of the English crowd at the Olympic Park. Read the full story via TeamGB

Dina Asher-Smith misses out on medal, but becomes fastest teenager in history over 200 metres. At seven of the past 10 World Championships Dina Asher-Smith would be waking up on Saturday morning knowing that her time in the 200 metres final had won her the gold medal. Shara Proctor wins long jump silver: Britain’s Shara Proctor had long jump world gold snatched away from her in the final round of the competition as Tianna Bartoletta’s last-gasp effort pushed her into silver. Full story via BBC
Bronze for 4x400m relay: Great Britain’s women won bronze in the 4x400m relay as the team ended the World Championships with a record four golds among seven medals. Christine Ohuruogu, Annika Onuora, Eilidh Child and a strong final leg from Seren Bundy-Davies, 20, saw the women finish behind Jamaica and USA. Full story via BBC
Emerging talent: Strong performances by Sophie Hitchon in the hammer saw her narrowly miss out on a medal by finishing 4th despite twice braking the British record. Holly Bradshaw (Bleasdale) finished 7th in the pole vault after clearing a season’s-best of 4.70m. Laura Muir was delighted with her fifth place in a high calibre 1500m final that saw world record holder Genzebe Dibaba take gold.
Polish Open: Britain’s Bianca Walkden wins taekwondo gold
British taekwondo fighter Bianca Walkden has won a gold medal at the Polish Open. Walkden beat South Korea’s Injong Lee 3-1 in the final of the Warsaw Cup’s 73kg division. The Liverpudlian, 23, reached the final thanks to a golden-point win over Serbia’s Milica Mandic. Read the full story via the BBC
Lizzie Armitstead retained the Road World Cup after the final round at the GP de Plouay-Bretagne.
The 26-year-old came out on top in a sprint finish with Emma Johnsson and world champion Pauline Ferrand Prevot. Armitstead, who took silver in the Olympic road race in 2012, won the title in 2014 with a race to spare and managed to hold off some fierce competition to take the win once again. Australia regain Women’s Ashes
Natalie Sciver put in a career-best all-round display of 4-15 and 47 as England Women ended their Ashes campaign with a consolation five-wicket win over Australia in the third T20, at Cardiff. Read full story via Sky Sports
Two days earlier Australia had regained the Women’s Ashes after beating England by 20 runs at Hove to take an unassailable 10-4 lead in the series.England bowled superbly on a slow pitch to restrict the Southern Stars to 107 for seven but they never recovered from a disastrous start to their reply and were bowled out for 87, their lowest score in a T20 international.
