The British Women’s Gymnastics team missed out on a medal in what was a high quality event at the World Championships this week. Despite a solid performance and a score of 168.496 points the team finished in sixth just short of their record fifth placing at Tokyo in 2011.

Gold went to the USA with a total of 179.280 with hosts China taking silver and Russia bronze. The British team is made up of Becky Downie, Hannah Whelan, Ruby Harrold, Kelly Simm, Gabby Jupp and Commonwealth Games star, Claudia Fragapane.

Becky Downie, one of the most experienced competitors and a 2008 Olympian believes the result is strong however and could lead to a medal hope at Rio 2016.

“Overall we can be really pleased. It was an incredible atmosphere out there and we all held it together as a team and put in strong performances,” she told Sportsbeat

“The younger girls came in and showed they are more than ready for the major senior competitions and that’s really exciting for GB looking ahead to the next Olympics.”
