Judo: Sally Conway wins gold at European Open

October 6, 2014

Sally Conway admitted she was determined to prove a point as she defeated Italian Jennifer Pitzanti to clinch gold in the under-70kg category at the European Open in Glasgow this weekend.

Conway had suffered a shock first-round defeat to Pitzanti at the World Championships in Russia at the end of August, but there was no repeat at the Emirates Arena as the 27-year-old comfortably saw off her opponent by yuko to take victory in the final.

“In the final I had the same opponent that I had in the World Championships,” said London 2012 Olympian Conway.

“The last time that we met I was only on the mat for 15,20 seconds, so obviously I wanted to put in a good performance.

“I’m delighted with this medal. It is great to be back in Glasgow performing. I heard my dad in the audience and with everyone cheering your name and it is a really nice feeling to overcome the nerves I may have felt in the past.”

Conway’s gold was one of four medals claimed by Great Britain with Gemma Howell also taking top spot on the podium in the under-63kg category.

Elsewhere Connie Ramsay and Sarah Adlington secured bronze medals in the under-57kg and over-78kg divisions respectively.
