Gold, Silver and Bronze for GB at World Mountain Biking championships

September 8, 2014

Britain’s women took an incredible clean sweep at this weekends UCI downhill World Championship final.

Manon Carpenter took the rainbow jersey ahead of defending world champion and race favourite Rachel Atherton with Tahnee Seagrave topping off the all British podium with a bronze medal.

In a close matched and highly competitive race, the three riders were the last to go in the final run. As Carpenter left the start gate Seegrave was in the lead having posted a time of 3:52.870 after a storming ride. Carpenter finished 3.463 seconds up her compatriot with a time of 3:49.407, with reigning champion Atherton the only competitor left to ride.

Despite a fantastic ride, Atherton finished just shy of nine hundredths of second down on Carpenter and had to settle for silver, whilst this year’s world cup champion Carpenter took the gold and the elite women’s title.

Speaking to British Cycling shortly after the race she said:

“It’s pretty crazy, amazing, just the best thing ever.” Carpenter enthused

This win means Manon Carpenter has repeated Rachel Atherton’s success of 2013 by winning both the World Cup Series and World Championship titles.
