Swimming: Great Britain finish top at European Championships

Great Britain finished the European Championships in Berlin at the top of the medals table after taking three golds on the final day. Fran Halsall and Jazz Carlin won individual golds in the 50m and 400m freestyle respectively, which helped Britain to it’s best ever showing at a European Championships.

Great Britain ended the meet with 24 medals, nine of them gold, their previous best European tally was six golds from 18 medals in 2010.

Fran Halsall’s superb 50m free swim of 24.32 seconds earned her third gold of the week after victories in the 50m backstroke and 4x100m mixed medley finals.

The 24-year-old also claimed a bronze medal, along with Georgia Davies, Sophie Taylor and Jemma Lowe, in the 4x100m medley.

Earlier, Jazz Carlin earned her second gold of the Championships in a thrilling women’s 400m freestyle. Earlier in the meet she won gold in the 800m freestyle.
