Football: England qualify for the World Cup finals in Canada 2015

August 22, 2024

England are on their way to the 2015 Women’s World Cup after beating Wales 4-0 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

All the goals came in the first half courtesy of Karen Carney, Eniola Aluko, Laura Bassett and Lianne Sanderson and the win was enough to give England the final point they needed to qualify.

Karen Carney’s curling free-kick fired England into the lead after 16 minutes. Then just six minutes before half time an incredible three goals came in quick succession starting with Chelsea’s Eniola Aluko who struck a cracking goal off a throw-in to volley the ball into the corner from 15 yards out.

Just minutes later Laura Bassett knocked home from a corner before Boston Breakers striker Lianne Sanderson sealed the win swiftly after.

The second half was a quieter affair with although it was not without it’s chances from both sides most notably from England’s Jodie Taylor who hit the post.

Captain Jess Fishlock dived to head Wales’ best chance wide as her side produced a spirited second-half performance.

England have reached the quarter-finals three times, but this team is playing with such confidence hopes will be high of doing better in Canada.

Second-placed Wales can still progress if they make the play-offs, their next match is against Ukraine in October.
