Commonwealth Games: Final day highlights
The final day of the commonwealth games did not disappoint. There was a gold and silver for England in the cycling and silver medals in both the mixed double badminton and squash finals.
Cycling: England’s Lizzie Armitstead and Emma Pooley claimed gold and silver in a gruelling and rain-soaked 98km road race. Having formed part of a breakaway group, Pooley stretched the group hard by riding out front and paving the way for Armitstead. Armitstead duly responded and with 7km to go powered past and went on to win her first gold after silver medals at Delhi in 2010 and the London Olympics two years ago.
Pooley, surprised by the lack of response from the remaining two riders continued to push hard and rode on to claim an emotional silver which marked her retirement from the sport. She now moves on the compete in triathlon.
South Africa’s Ashleigh Pasio was third and Scotland’s Katie Archibald a creditable seventh.
Badminton: Husband-and-wife badminton team Chris and Gabby Adcock sealed Commonwealth mixed doubles gold with a comprehensive 2-0 win over compatriots Chris Langridge and Heather Olver in Glasgow.
The top seeds, who also helped England to team silver, won in two games to seal the match, meaning they went through the whole tournament without losing a game.
Squash: England won silver in the mixed doubles through Peter Barker and Alison Waters. They lost to to Australia’s David Palmer and Rachael Grinham in the gold medal play-off match.
