Commonwealth Games: Day one highlights

With so many sports and so many medals being won it’s hard to keep up with it all so we’ve selected some of the best stories and results from day one.
Triathlon: The first medal event of the games was the women’s triathlon and for the home countries it was a huge success with Jodie Stimpson and Vicky Holland taking Gold and Bronze respectively.
Judo: Sisters Kimberley and Louise Renicks won Scotland’s first gold medals of the Commonwealth Games with thrilling judo victories before a raucous home crowd. Kimberley, 26, secured her country’s first gold, beating India’s Sushila Likmabam courtesy of an ippon in the -48kg weight category. Louise, 31, then overcame England’s Kelly Edwards in a nervy -52kg final.
In the last contest of the night, Nekoda Davis of England beat Scotland’s Stephanie Inglis in the women’s -57kg class.
Cycling: England’s Sophie Thornhill and her pilot Helen Scott won the first Para-sport gold of Glasgow 2014 with victory in the tandem sprint event for blind and visually-impaired athletes. The pair, dominant throughout, beat Scotland’s Aileen McGlynn and Louise Haston 2-0 in the best-of-three final.
Jess Varnish had earlier won Team England’s first medal in the velodrome with bronze in the 500m time-trial. Australia’s Anna Meares earned a record-equalling fifth gold medal in track cycling at the Commonwealth Games with a time of 33.435.
Swimming: Scotland’s Hannah Miley earned the first gold medal in the pool after obliterating her own Commonwealth Games record in the 400m medley. England’s Aimee Willmott, 21, from Middlesbrough, led for the first 350m but was overhauled in the final leg and had to settle for silver.
