Commonwealth Games: 7 Chances for Wales to Win

Last alphabetically in our Home Nations previews but top in our hearts (ahem…) is Wales. Today we look at some of Wales’ best medal chances.
1. Reigning Commonwealth T37 100m silver medalist Jenny McLoughlin won bronze in the 2012 Paralympic T35-T38 100m relay and also competed at the Beijing Paralympics as a 16-year-old. She is widely considered amongst the favourites for Glasgow.
2. The Welsh swimming squad features the likes of Olympians Jazz Carlin, Georgia Davies, and Jemma Lowe and looks good to build on their aquatic successes of 2010. The trio of Carlin, Davies, and Lowe won four medals between them in Delhi, and all three have benefited from increased experience over the last four years.
3. 19-year-old Track cyclist Elinor Barker has dominated the junior circuit in recent years and is well poised to make her mark on Commonwealth cycling in Glasgow. She’s already made quite the statement at the senior level, winning two UCI Track World Championships gold medals in the last two years. Barker was named Carwyn James Junior Sports Personality of the Year at the 2012 BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year awards and possesses the talent and gumption to keep racking up the honours.
4. At 24, rhythmic gymnast Frankie Jones already has two Commonwealth Games and an Olympics under her belt. The British Champion won Commonwealth silver in the hoop discipline in 2010, and just missed out on another medal when she finished 4th overall at the same Games. Jones is looking to cap off a top-class career with gold in both events this year.
5. Welsh weightlifting is looking strong (sorry- couldn’t resist…) this summer. Five-time Commonwealth medallist Michaela Breeze MBE has come out of retirement to compete for more glory, whilst teammate Natasha Perdue has proven herself a medal contender in the 69kg class.
6. Helen Jenkins has become a bit of a household name as of late and we couldn’t leave her off this list. With Non Stanford out of Glasgow with an ankle injury, Jenkins is Wales’ golden favourite in the triathlon. The three-time World Champion has a very real chance of adding Commonwealth glory to her career highlights reel.
7. Carys Parry, hammer thrower, finished 6th at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, won silver in the 2010, and is gunning for gold this year. She holds the Welsh record in the event.
