Basketball: Great Britain reach EuroBasket finals

June 26, 2014

Despite ending their Eurobasket qualifying campaign with a 70-63 loss to Lithuania, Great Britain’s women have secured their place in the finals of the competition for the third successive year.

A win for Bulgaria against Israel in another qualifying group ensured GB a place in next year’s finals.

In a close game in Worcester, Britain kept pace with Lithuania until the last quarter where the visitors stretched their lead to secure the win.

Rachel Vanderwal led GB’s scoring with 13 points and Azania Stewart added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

“Our guys did a fantastic job,” said GB head coach Peter Buckle. “We came here and set some targets about how we wanted to play and I’m very proud about how far our team have come.”

It is hoped Britain’s qualification could lead to a re-think of the funding currently allocated to basketball.

The sport recently had their total funding cut, but British Basketball performance chairman Roger Moreland says he intends to bring up GB’s continued success at European level with the Sports Minister to see if funding can be found.
