7 Things to Know about Commonwealth Games Triathlon

What happens when you combine Sportsister’s Triathlon Week with our Commonwealth Games countdown features? The following fascinating facts, of course.
1. Triathlon is classified as an ‘optional sport’ in the Commonwealth Games, which means it may or may not be included in each games’ programme.
2. Triathlon was not included in the 2010 Delhi Games, but will make a triumphant return this summer in Glasgow.
3. Manchester 2002 saw triathlon make its debut as an official Commonwealth Games sport. It had previously been included as a demonstration sport in 1990.
4. Glasgow 2014 will also feature the introduction of a Mixed Relay event to the Commonwealth Games. Teams of two women and two men will compete, with each athlete completing a ‘super-sprint’ triathlon before tagging their next team-mate.
5. Look out for Wales to make a statement this summer. Current ITU World Champion Non Stanford and two-time former World Champion Helen Jenkins both look strong upon return from injury and are favourites for Glasgow.
6. Emma Snowsill of Australia set the women’s Commonwealth triathlon record on home turf at the Melbourne 2006 Games. Her time of 1:58:02.60 was faster than the time which won her gold at the Beijing Olympics.
7. Don’t miss any of the action- Glasgow’s triathlon events will take place on 24 July and 26 July at Strathclyde Country Park.
