Virgin Active seeks ‘Active Aces’
Virgin Active has launched a new programme with the aim of helping to coach and inspire the next generation of tennis stars.
The campaign, in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), introduces a new tennis coaching programme that aims to enable young players to benefit from expert coaching, whatever their ability. These sessions are targeted for 3-10 year olds and players can work up through a series of different bands from the youngest - ‘tots’ to ‘junior active ace’. Each of these bands will have four different levels which can be progressed through once a player has achieved specific skills. This programme will be introduced across 21 Virgin Active Health and Racquet clubs from Spring 2014.
Alongside the introduction of this coaching, Virgin Active is also launching a talent search. This search is open to 5-8 year olds and will be judged by British number one and Virgin Active ambassador, Laura Robson. Regional competitions for this search will be held in May and the finals in June, there will be two winners – one boy and one girl.
This competition-based search will run every year for the next three years. Sir Richard Branson has said that he looks forward to “encouraging young people into the sport. We are looking for two young winners for our ‘Search for a tennis ace’ campaign who will benefit from our coaching schemes”.
Winners will receive a three year family membership, coaching from Virgin Active, a racket and clothing contract with Wilson sporting goods and a chance to play against Laura Robson.
Robson, who has endured frustration due to injury this year has said: “I am incredibly excited about focusing my energy on helping Virgin Active find and nurture the next generation of tennis talent”.
