Football: Birmingham City Ladies level going into Champions League second leg

Birmingham City Ladies kept their hopes of making the Champions League final alive with a 0-0 draw against Tyreso on Saturday.
Facing the Swedish side who had World Player of the Year Marta in their ranks, Birmingham kept a clean sheet to go into next week’s away leg with a fighting chance of making the final of the competition for the first time in their history.
Tyreso dominated early on with Marta and Veronica Boquete having chances to put the visitors ahead, however after half-time David Parker’s side were more composed and enjoyed more possession.
Captain Karen Carney twice almost slipped in Kirsty Linnett, and Jade Moore saw her 25-yard shot fly just inches wide of the post.
Both teams had their chances to sneak a goal late on, however Birmingham held on well to deny Tyreso a crucial away score.
Parker said his team would take a lot of confidence from the result, knowing they could compete with one of the top teams.
“I think it was a massive result and one that we can take with us and build on. It’s a shame we’re not taking a lead over there because that’s what we wanted to do, but it wasn’t to be,” he said.
