Football: FA WSL expansion begins with application process

Doncaster Rovers Belles had a great start to their first season in league 2 after their controversial relegation at the end of 2013 with an away win over Aston Villa Ladies. Watford and Millwall drew 2-2 meaning both teams come away with a point. Reading took a 3-0 win over Yeovil Town.

Doncaster Rovers Belles boss Gordon Staniforth heralded a new dawn after his side got their FA Women’s Super League 2 campaign off to a flying start with victory over Aston Villa Ladies.

Bethany England’s early strike put the visitors on their way before Sue Smith wrapped things up with a penalty late on. It means that Doncaster began life in England’s second tier in perfect fashion after their relegation following a miserable campaign last term.

For both Millwall and Watford it was their first experience playing in the FAWSL and the 2-2 match was a thriller. Emma Whitter put Millwall ahead before goals from Megan Wynne and Renee Hector put Watford ahead, only for Sophie Perry to equalise in fortuitous circumstances with what appeared to be a cross.

“It was a fair result,” said Millwall Lionesses manager Alberto Kurti “If you look at the amount of opportunities and the styles of play within the two teams I felt it could have gone either way.

Yeovil Town Ladies manager Sarah Lawler is convinced her side can cut it in the FA Women’s Super League 2 despite beginning their campaign with a heavy defeat to Reading.

Fran Kirby’s double did the damage, while Cheryl Williams also found the net, as Reading eased past the side that came up with them from the Women’s Premier League Southern Division last season.
