Oxford beat Cambridge yesterday to win the Newton Women’s Boat Race at Henley-on-Thames. This year’s race was the last to be held at Henley, as the women will join their male counterparts on the Tideway course from 2015.

The Dark Blues covered the 2000m course in 5 minutes, 50 seconds, finishing 4 lengths ahead of the Light Blue boat. It was the sixth victory in seven years for Oxford.

The Women’s Boat Race was first held in 1927 amidst harsh criticism from male rowers and academics at both universities. It has been held at Henley-on-Thomas since 1977. From 2015 the Women’s event will be held on the same day and course as the Men’s Boat Race.

The move comes as a direct result of a sponsorship package from Newton Investments.

Oxford’s crews also won the Women’s Reserves Boat Race and the Women’s Lightweight Boat Race at Henley yesterday. Cambridge Lightweight men prevented a Dark Blue sweep with a victory in the day’s final race.
