Football: FIFA U17′s World Cup quarter final places decided

The group stages of the FIFA U-17′s World Cup drew to a close on Sunday with Venezuela, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Ghana, Italy, Nigeria and Spain all progressing to the quarter finals.

In Group C, Japan confirmed their dominance and topped the group with a comfortable 3-0 win over New Zealand, leaving Spain to take the second qualifying place despite their 7-1 crushing of Paraguay.

Nigeria used their trademark power to defeat Mexico 3-0 and claim top-spot in Group D. The other match in Group D, between two teams who could not qualify for the quarter finals, saw China PR score a 3-1 comeback win over Colombia amid a flurry of second-half goals.

Germany suffered a surprise elimination after losing to Korea DPD in Group B, whilst in the other matches in Group B, Canada battled to a 2-1 victory over Ghana to secure their place in the last eight, with Ghana qualifying from second place.

Venezuela scored a 1-0 win over Italy in Group A, with both teams progressing to the quarter finals at the expense of Zambia and hosts Costa Rica.

The quarter finals take place on Thursday 27th March and the line up is:

Venezuela V Canada

Japan V Mexico

Ghana V Italy

Nigeria V Spain
