Taekwondo: The latest from Manchester’s Grand Prix

There was a lot of action yesterday at the Taekwondo Grand Prix in Manchester, but not all good news for our British women.
Russian world champion Olga Ivanova beat GB’s Bianca Walkden 9-5 in the second round, after the 22 year old Briton defeated Colombia’s Pan-American bronze medallist Sandra Vanegas Valderrama in her opening contest.
“I’m gutted because I think I was unlucky and I gave it a good fight,” said Walkden afterwards.
“I wouldn’t say she is a different level from me but sometimes it happens, and I’m off to the French Open next weekend so hopefully I can redeem myself there.”
Elsewhere, British team-mate and fellow +67kg fighter Stephanie Allen, also went out in round two, losing 7-2 to Mexico’s current world silver medallist Briseida Acosta Balarezo.
And Georgia Barnes, 17, enjoyed an impressive opening round victory over Norway’s Janike Lai in the -49kg division, before losing in the final moments of sudden-death against China’s former world silver medallist Zhao Li.
London 2012 Olympic gold medallist Jade Jones is in action tomorrow, 15 December, in the women’s -57kg category.
