GB 400m hurdler Perri Shakes-Drayton has admitted she is ‘gutted’ that her IAAF World Athletics Championships experience in Moscow ended the way it did.

The 24 year old was billed as a medal contender, but her hopes were dashed when a knee injury sustained in the 400m hurdles final saw her finish a distant seventh. This prompted an early return to the UK for the injury to be assessed, ruling her out of further competition in the 4x100m relay.

“Gutted my champs ended the way they did,” she wrote on Twitter. “All the best for the 4×4 girls, sure you’ll do me proud.”

The British champion, ranked second on the UK 400m hurdles all-time list behind Sally Gunnell and third in the world for 2013, hit a number of hurdles on her way to finishing the race and later said her knee hadn’t felt right before she’d even knocked any of the barriers.

“It’s not the way I would have liked to have finished,” Shakes-Drayton said afterward the race.

Following an ultrasound scan on last night, 15 August, Shakes-Drayton returned to the UK with her coach to receive a full assessment of her injury.

Fingers crossed it recovers quickly!
