Swimming: Ellie Simmonds looks to defend title at IPC World Championships
Paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds closed in on the defence of her World S6 400m Freestyle title with a dominant performance in the heats on the opening day of the 2013 IPC World Championships in Montreal.
The 18 year old set a season’s best 5:33.53 to qualify more than 21 seconds clear of the field and secure lane four for the final.
“That felt really good,” said Simmonds, who is undefeated on the world stage in this event since her IPC World Championship debut in 2006.
“My aim was just to get a feel for it this morning with my first swim of the meet. I love 400 Free – it’s one of my favourite races so I just enjoyed it.”
Hannah Russell, Amy Marren and Jessica-Jane Applegate also qualified fastest for their finals in the S12 100m Freestyle, S9 100m Freestyle and S14 200m Freestyle respectively.
Russell clocked the fourth fastest time of her career to win her heat in 1:01.48 and Marren led the way with a personal best 1:03.83 with fellow Brits Stephanie Millward second fastest in 1:04.19 and Claire Cashmore fifth fastest on 1:06.44.
Paralympic champion Applegate set the second fastest time of her career to lead qualifiers in 2:11.71, while teammate Chloe Davies was third fastest through in 2:15.73.
