Rowing: Round-up of day one at Lucerne World Cup

Olympic Champion Helen Glover and former World U23 finalist Polly Swann were the first GB crew to qualify direct for Sunday’s finals yesterday (Friday 12 July) on the first day of the Lucerne World Cup regatta.
After a challenging opening heat their Coach Robin Williams said it was good for the pair to face such tough competition early on. “They probably would have liked to have been further in front but they got the job done”, he said. “There are some quick pairs around and it’s good to be tested”.
Elsewhere, Frances Houghton and Victoria Meyer-Laker finished second in the women’s double scull heat.
The women’s eight is the only GB crew yet to race. They have a straight final on Sunday for which they will race for lane order today (Saturday 13 July).
The regatta doubles up as a qualifying for the World Championships and will be the rowers’ last major event before it, which takes place 25 August - 1 September.
The finals of this World Cup will be broadcast on BBC TV Sunday, 14 July, with a highlights programme on Monday 13 on BBC 2 at 15.00.
