Netball Scotland are partnering with Anita active through 2013 to promote the use of sports bras in sport for all girls and women involved in sport from school days upwards. In an ideal world they would like to see sports bras included on the PE kit lists for girls of secondary school age, much like trainers and other safety equipment as many girls (and women) are totally unaware of the problems caused by exercising without a supportive bra.

Sport puts a great strain on the bust. For example, when jogging the bust moves up and down by around 9 centimetres - over a distance of 1,000 metres this means 84 metres! There are no muscles in the breast ONLY the Coopers Ligament, which generates all the uplift in the breasts. If this ligament becomes damaged it cannot be repaired, so we must protect and retain its function. In short, not wearing a properly fitted sports bra could result in stretch marks and sagging breasts, as well as back, neck and shoulder problems. A supportive sports bra prevents up to 80% of the upward/downward movement where a normal bra prevents a maximum of 35%.

The Scottish Thistles are going to be engaging in a national PR campaign targeting Scottish schools and media with the message ‘ Don’t Go on court without proper support’
