Canoeing: Lizzie Neave takes K1 gold in Cardiff

It was another medal winning weekend for the Great Britain team at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup in Cardiff, as Neave’s gold brought their total haul to seven.
Lizzie Neave started the final day with gold in the K1 Women’s final, her first win ever in individual event. Then Scotsman David Florence and Richard Hounslow, from North London, followed up on her success with the silver medal in the Men’s C2. Adding them to Saturday’s gold and bronze medals pushed GB to the top of the individual medal table.
‘That’s my first individual gold medal so I’m really happy with that.’ said thrilled 26 year old, Neave, afterwards. ‘I’ve had gold medals in the team events before but never in the individuals; my previous best was a bronze at the Worlds, Europeans and World Cup but never better than that.’
Neave competed for Team GB in the London Olympics, finishing twelfth in K1. Before coming to Cardiff her international season has seen her seventh in the K1 at the European Championships at Krakow a fortnight ago, where she also won silver in the Women’s K1 team.
Success for Great Britain continued in the afternoon during the team events with the Women’s C1, Men’s K1 and Men’s C2 teams all winning silver medals. It was a fine finish to a successful week for the host nation which collected seven medals in total.
