Football: Arsenal are ready to reclaim The FA Women’s Cup

Arsenal defender Gilly Flaherty has said that she is determined to reclaim The FA Women’s Cup crown that she considers their own.

The 21 year old has been a regular member of the Gunners’ first team squad during five of their record eleven Cup-winning seasons, including four in a row between 2006 and 2009.

But having lost to Chelsea in last season’s Semi-Final, she is anxious to get her hands back on the trophy when her side face Bristol Academy in the final this Sunday.

Flaherty said, “It’s good that we got back into the final after last year. We wanted to get here more than ever this season.

“The hurt we felt when Chelsea beat us, and when Everton beat us in the final in 2010; that doesn’t go away. Every time we lose a game or get knocked out of a Cup we aim to come back stronger.

“Before we played Liverpool at Anfield [in the Semi-Final], we remembered how we felt after that Chelsea game. We didn’t want to feel the same way again.

“More than anything it was our team spirit and our fight that got us through that Liverpool game and we’ll need the same against Bristol if we are to get The Cup back.

“Bristol is always a tough game, they always give us a battle. We will respect them, but we know we can beat anyone on our day.

“They have made a really good start to the season, but it is one match, one we know we are capable of winning.

“The FA Cup means a lot to us and we want it back home where it belongs.”

The final takes place at the Keepmoat Stadium, this Sunday 26 May.
