Sprint Canoeing: British women take bronze at world cup

The newly formed Women’s K4 crew of Lani Belcher, Angela Hannah, Hayleigh Mason and Louisa Sawers took a well earned bronze medal at the Canoe Sprint World Cup in Racice, This weekend.

After only four weeks together and racing in their second regatta of the season, this was an excellent result for the crew and is sure to please their new coach Paul Darby-Dowman.

Speaking after the race Louisa Sawers said: “We stuck to our race plan and it went well. Our 250m up was really solid and all four of us went up together.

“As a crew we have been working on what is the best race plan and we are slowly nailing each part of this. We learnt from the first World Cup and it gave us confidence going into this one. The final was all about focusing on the last 100m and keeping it solid and strong.”

Rachel Cawthorn continued to show improving form with a 7th place in the A final of the K1 200m, to add to her 5th place in the K1 500m on Saturday.

“I didn’t have a great start, so I’m happy to get 7th”she said. “It definitely gave me a good taste for 200m racing – it’s very speedy!”
