Liverpool Ladies began their FA Women’s Super League campaign on a strong footing after a victory at Lincoln this weekend.
Liverpool Ladies boss Matt Beard believes there is more to come from his side after such a strong opening performance. The Merseysiders finished at the foot of the table last season, but following a string of new signings, the Reds are a force to be reckoned with under Beard.
And his side got their season off to the perfect start with a 1-0 win at a blustery Sincil Bank courtesy of Natasha Dowie’s header.
“Training everyday helps us to gel and we’ve learned a lot from the games we played in pre-season,” said Beard. “As we progress I think we’ll get even stronger as a unit and our performances will get better.”
With a strong wind at their backs, Liverpool made a bright start and were rewarded when they took a seventh minute lead. Fara Williams floated the ball in from the left and Dowie rose highest to plant a well-placed header just beyond Bardsley’s grasp.
As predicted, when the winds changed, Lincoln showed more urgency in the second half. Carla Cantrell almost hauled her side level on the hour mark. After being set free by some trickery from strike partner Precious Hamilton, Cantrell saw her dipping effort fly just too high, but the equaliser failed to arrive to the disappointment of Lincoln manager Rick Passmoor.
“I think it just shows you where we are in terms of the progress we’re making,” he said. “We’re not making excuses, but came up against a very good side today.”
