Football: Ellen White secures England win over Canada

With the European Championships in Sweden just three months away, England’s preparations appear to be building well as they looked the sharper side against Canada in Rotherham. However, whilst both sides had their chances, it was down to Ellen White to seal the win in injury time.

The first half proved frustrating with both sides having chances, but neither side really showing much sparkle. For England, the best chance came through a corner from Rachel Yankey to Steph Houghton which shot straight at Erin McLeod in the Canada goal.

Houghton came close again with a stunning volley that skimmed over the bar, but it was not until the second half that the game livened up with the arrival of Jordan Nobbs, Jess Clarke and Toni Duggan. Nobbs proved her worth within a minute by firing a shot just over the bar.

Fara Williams and Ellen White both came close when the Canada defence failed to deal with a cross, but neither was able to penetrate Canada’s goal.

With Engand beginning to flow there were several near misses, most notably from a move that featured Clarke and Nobbs, but the follow-through from Alex Scott at the edge of the box went over.

Finally Ellen White sealed the win by heading in an off-target shot from Fara Williams.

The match, which was attended by a rousing crowd of nearly 5000, also marked a landmark for Rachel Yankey who reached 125 caps for England women - matching that held by Peter Shilton for England men.
