Tennis: Aegon GB Fed Cup Team to face Argentina

The Aegon GB Fed Cup Team has drawn Argentina away for the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group ll play-offs.

The play offs will take place on 20th and 21st April where the winning team will be promoted to the World Group ll in 2014.

GB Fed Cup Captain Judy Murray said,

“Argentina away on clay will be a tough challenge for us but we have a strong squad and a huge opportunity to grab a place in the World Group. Vamos!”

After finishing joint first with Poland, the GB Fed Cup Team guaranteed promotion from the 16-nation Europe/Africa Zone Group l tie.

Furthermore, The Lawn Tennis Association has announced today that Iain Bates has been appointed the new Head of Women’s Tennis and will continue as coach of the GB Fed Cup Team.

As well as this, Jeremy Bates has been appointed Lead Coach for Women’s Tennis and Leon Smith will return to his dual role as Head of Men’s Tennis.

Following these changes LTA Chief Executive, Roger Draper commented, “This is a really exciting time for the women’s game in this country”

“These changes will help us not only to deliver success in this area, but also enable us to continue to use the inspirational performances of our players to encourage more women and girls to play and follow tennis.”

He further added, “I’d also like thank Leon for the key part he has played in the development of the Women’s team over the past two years.”

“His focus now is going to be just as important, in overseeing the transition of some of our highly talented male juniors into the senior game, and developing the Aegon GB Davis Cup Team.” 

In Murray’s dual role as Fed Cup Captain and Player Development Advisor she will lead this work to develop and support more female coaches to work with younger female players.
