October 2013 is a pivotal entry into the sporting calendar with runners from all over the world due to converge on the coastal towns of Bournemouth and Poole for the chance to run in the inaugural Bournemouth Marathon Festival.

It captures and promotes the essence of a vibrant, healthy and active lifestyle through a series of fun and challenging mass participation running races, all inspired by the stunning coastal arena of Bournemouth and Poole.

What’s on offer?

There is a race for everyone at the Bournemouth Marathon festival weekend – from the elite international athlete to youngsters still at primary school.

Here’s how the first marathon festival weekend unfolds:

SATURDAY OCTOBER 5, 2013

2pm: Bournemouth Marathon Festival  Children’s Race (6-10 year olds) – 1.5K distance. Starting and finishing near the BMF Hub in the Lower Gardens, Bournemouth this beautiful coastal route takes in the Bournemouth Pier.

2.30pm: Bournemouth Marathon Festival 3K Junior Race (11-14 year olds) – 3k distance. This event also starts and finishes near the BMF Hub in the Lower Gardens, Bournemouth taking in the Bournemouth Pier.

4pm: Bournemouth Marathon Festival Supersonic race – 10k distance. Fast and flat the Supersonic is the ultimate in 10k speed. Starting and finishing near the BMF Hub in the Lower Gardens, Bournemouth, this beautiful coastal route heads towards Boscombe before turning back towards Bournemouth and going around the historical Bournemouth Pier and onto Poole on the flat and super fast beach front promenade then turning finishing in the beautiful Bournemouth Lower Gardens.

6.50pm: Bournemouth Marathon Festival Speed of Light Wheelchair race – 5k distance. This coastal route also takes in the Bournemouth Pier.

6.55pm: Bournemouth Marathon Festival Speed of Light Handbike race – 5k distance. Starting and finishing near the BMF Hub in the Lower Gardens, Bournemouth.

7pm: Bourenemouth Marathon Festival Speed of Light road race – 5k distance. Utilising the phenomenal prom and pier area at dusk. A unique running experience with runners being provided with luminous and led wristbands and led laces as part of their entry. Starting and finishing near the BMF Hub in the Lower Gardens, Bournemouth this beautiful coastal route takes in the Bournemouth Pier.

WomanRunnerSUNDAY OCTOBER 6, 2013

8AM: Bournemouth Marathon Festival Half Marathon. Starts at Kings Park Drive. The Bournemouth Half Marathon course follows the full Marathon route, taking in both Boscombe and Bournemouth Piers along this coastal route. This is running as it should be.

10AM: Bournemouth Marathon. Start points is Kings Park Drive. Inspired by the stunning coastal arena of Bournemouth and Poole this is the pinnacle of endurance athletics.

Some other interesting facts:

More than 800 race crew will come together over the marathon weekend to look after all the runners. It is thanks to them that runners’ thirst is quenched, bags transported and that all important medal is given out at the end.

There are nearly 200 charities affiliated with the Bournemouth Marathon Festival and more than £500,000 is hoped to be raised for good causes.

In the marathon, the average time to reach the half-way point is 01:58:34 while the average time for the second half of the race is 02:19:14. So, on average entrants run the second half of the marathon 20 min 40 seconds slower than they do the 1st half.
