Awards: Jade Jones named BBC Wales Sports Personality of 2012

Team GB’s taekwondo golden girl Jade Jones found herself another success after being named as the BBC Cyrmu Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2012.

The 19-year-old expressed her delight stating: “It’s a great honour – I can’t believe I have won.”

“There were so many great people I was up against and the fact that public got to vote… it’s such a great honour that people recognized what I have done”.

Jade became Britain’s first Olympic gold medalist in taekwondo at the London Games earlier this year and fought off tough competition from rugby’s Dan Lydiate and cyclist Geraint Thomas to claim the awards honour.

This proved an easy win compared to her battle in the London 2012 games final against China’s Yuzho Hou where she won 6-4 to claim the -57kg title.

As well as Jade, Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium saw cyclist Elinor Barker picking up Junior Sportswoman of the Year. This was a fitting reward for the young 18-year-old who has had a promising year of achievements.

Elinor recently rode to victory at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Glasgow with GB’s women’s team pursuit Dani King and Laura Trott.
