Speed skating: Christie’s medal rush continues in Shanghai

Speed skater Elise Christie’s run of good form continued this weekend with another medal in the World Cup Series. This time it was bronze in the 1000m(1) at the fourth world cup event of the season in Shanghai. The world number one has medalled at each stage of the event, including gold and silver in Nagoya last week and two silvers in Canada.

GB Short Track’s Performance Director Stuart Horsepool said: “It’s been a great world cup so far for Elise, but she was disappointed to only come away with bronze. She made a small mistake and got caught on the line, but that’s the nature of our sport. I think she did well and it’s still a medal on the world stage, but I think the fatigue of travelling across three continents in as many months and the long weekends competing caught up with her in Shanghai.”

Christie missed out on the final of the 100m(2) on Sunday but she fought back to win the quarter final to record 9th place. She retains her number one ranking and the focus now turns to the winter training programme, preparing for the European Championships in Sweden, 18-20 January.
