Elise Christie will be defending her world number one position as she heads to the ISU World Cup this weekend, November 30 – December 2.
The third leg of the series takes place in Nagoya, Japan, and Christie will be one of eight British skaters competing at the event.
The 22-year-old Scot travelled to Asia last week in preparation for the competition and is looking to maintain her ranking in the 1000m event.
Reflecting on recent events, she described becoming world number one as ‘a bit of a shock’.
“I wasn’t expecting it,” she said. “I’d just fallen in my 500m so I was a bit disappointed, but when my coach told me I was ranked number one it made me feel a bit better!
:I hope I can keep my position, although it will tough and in this sport there’s always a chance you could fall. But then I wasn’t expecting it the first time, so who knows.”
Christie won two silver medals in Calgary and Montreal in October to become world number one. The team, which also features Charlotte Gilmartin, hopes to add to Christie’s current world cup medal haul in Japan.
Other skaters from the GB Short Track team will also be competing at the Star Class Cup this weekend, with Kathryn Thomson and Mari Deland from the National Performance Centre in Nottingham taking on European skaters in Hasselt, Belgium.
