Cycling: Glasgow World Cup - Day 2

Day two at the Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow saw more thrilling action from the British women. Jess Varnish and Becky James took a silver and bronze in the individual sprint and Laura Trott performed well in the first day of the Omnium.

The semi-final of the individual sprint saw last night’s teammates Rebecca James and Jessica Varnish go head-to-head to earn a place in the gold medal race. After the first two legs of the semi-final the riders it was 1-1, with it all coming down to the decider. But a strong display by Varnish earned her place in the gold medal race.

In the final Vogel put in a solid performance to take the opening race. The second race followed the same vein as Varnish attempted to go out early with the sprint only for Vogel to come back and take the win and secure gold.

In the bronze medal race, James took the first of three races with a solid performance but Lee came back in the second to force a deciding duel. In a brave and decisive final race, James held her nerve and rode brilliantly to take Lee on the inside and over the line to secure the bronze medal.

In the Omnium, Laura Trott started as World and Olympic champion but faced tough competition from a strong field.

In the Flying Lap, Trott finished an unexpected fourth with the Australian, Ashlee Ankudinoff, taking the win with a solid performance.  The Points Race was similarly disapointing with a ninth place finish.

But the elimination race, one of Trotts best events, was a thriller. It was an eventful race that saw one rider go down hard and needing to be stretchered off. This forced a restart, after which a canny Trott rode a perfect race with an enthralling sprint over the last lap to take the win.
