The Kukri Adventure Scholarship launched earlier this month with a prize fund of £20,000 plus expert advice, kit and support up for grabs for aspiring adventurers.
The Scholarship invites people to submit their adventure plans in the form of a video which should outline their grand ambitions. These entries will then be judged by a star studded panel with the winner gaining access of up to £20,000 to fund their adventure.
The opportunity to claim such impressive funding hasn’t gone under the radar, and one group of female adventurers, The Coxless Rowers, have set their sights on this as an initial challenge en route to their eventual adventure challenge - rowing the Pacific.
The Coxless Rowers are an all female ocean rowing team who are attempting to become the first all female team of four to row the Pacific Ocean next June, and break the current speed record in the process.
Rowing the Pacific Ocean is a huge challenge and the four rowers will attempt to complete the entire crossing as a six-month, three-stage, row, with two ‘breaks’ en route, travelling from San Francisco to Hawaii, Hawaii to Samoa and Samoa to Cairns, Australia.
“The Kukri Adventure scholarship would provide us with the platform we so passionately want and need to make our dream to row the Pacific Ocean a reality,” said Annabel Hancock, Co-founder of The Coxless Rowers.
The judging panel searching for Britain and Ireland’s next world record breaking adventurer(s) includes Sarah Outen MBE, the first woman and youngest person to row solo across the Indian Ocean, and Michelle Rothwell, the fastest woman to do the Arch2Arc challenge. Once the public have voted for their favourite submitted video the entries will be assessed by the experts, and Hancock expressed how much securing votes, and ultimately the Scholarship, means to the team.
“This scholarship would make our adventure happen,” she said. “We are so grateful to Kukri for providing us with this opportunity because after all, we can all talk about doing great ‘things’. But we don’t just want to talk. We believe that anything is possible in this life and given this scholarship we want to go out there and prove that. To help us inspire others and live our dream.”
Visit the Kukri Facebook page for more details and to vote on your favourite video. The Coxless Rowers are still looking for members to join their team. If you think you’ve got what it takes you can find all the info on their website, or if you fancy taking on your own challenge and want to get involved with the Scholarship full details on how to enter can be found at www.kukrievents.com.
