Funding: Sports stars launch £20,000 Adventure Scholarship

Top names in sport have come together to keep this summer’s sporting spirit alive with the launch of an innovative Adventure Scholarship.

Funding: Sports stars launch £20,000 Adventure ScholarshipWorld record breaking adventurer Mark Beaumont and television presenter Ben Shephard, among other big names in adventure sport, are spearheading the launch of the ‘Kukri Adventure Scholarship’ – an initiative for aspiring adventurers which will offer not only a prize fund of £20,000 but expert advice, kit and support.

Aware that funding is the first hurdle sporting adventurers face, Mark was delighted that Kukri founder and keen sportsman, Phil Morris, shared his passion for getting young people into sport and adventure.

Mark, who most notably broke the world record for cycling around the world in 2007/08 comments: “I have experienced how tough it is to get to the start of your first expedition. At that stage it’s not your athletic ability but rather finding the right moral, technical and financial support for your dream. The KAS is all of that and I am very proud to help budding adventurers get the backing they need. I love hearing about big adventure aspirations and I know that these people will go on to inspire others.”

The Scholarship will invite people to submit their adventure plans in the form of a 2 minute video which should outline their grand ambitions. These entries will then be judged by a star studded panel. The winner will then have access up to £20,000 to fund their adventure. The project also aims to develop a sense of community, with aspiring adventurers encouraged to share advice, stories and support. Kukri, meanwhile, will be supplying kit and expert advice, with the aim of helping people put their dreams into practice.

The judging panel searching for Britain and Ireland’s next world record breaking adventurer(s) includes Sarah Outen MBE, the first woman and youngest person to row solo across the Indian Ocean, and Michelle Rothwell, the fastest woman to do the Arch2Arc challenge.

Budding adventurers should enter by uploading a 2-minute video to the ‘Kukri Adventure Scholarship’ tab on the Kukri Events Facebook page. Full details on how to enter can be found at www.kukrievents.com.
