It’s official, England have a new training ground and what a ground it is. To be honest, training ground probably doesn’t do it justice, so let’s go with state-of-the-art national football centre.

St. George’s Park is The FA’s £100m development in Burton-upon-Trent. A multi-sports facility, it will act as the training home for Club England and its 24 representative teams, as well as a number of other world-class teams and individual athletes as they prepare for major competitions.

Crucially, The FA have said the centre has been created to boost the profile of women’s football, with England Women’s National Coach Hope Powell impressed by the facilities on offer and they way it has made the female players feel ‘valued’.

Speaking at the launch of the the new national centre, Powell told The FA: “Everything being on site is important and it’s the best of everything.

“It’s the best pitches, the best rehabilitation centre and there’s an England feel about it.

“It’s where all the teams will train and your paths can cross – England women and men – and you feel as if it’s a home of football.”

The team got the chance to train at St. George’s Park ahead of their European qualifier against Croatia last month.

“Coming here was fantastic,” Powell said at the time.

“The girls felt valued. They were exceptional in training, they enjoyed the layout and they enjoyed the training.

“They were recognised here as the Senior England team and not just the Senior Women’s England team.”

The centre is also home to Perform at St. George’s Park, a world-class sports and exercise medicine, human performance and rehabilitation centre at the heart of the new training home.

The Perform centre combines the latest cutting-edge technologies and leading sports physicians and although it is designed for elite athletes, it’s also accessible to anyone, including corporate groups, individuals, schools and sports teams.

“The centre will be home to the England medical teams and I have no doubt that it will help England football teams of all age groups maximise their performance, both on and off the pitch,” said David Sheepshanks, Chairman of St George’s Park.

“I look forward to Perform becoming an internationally renowned centre of excellence and a hub for sports performance experts, innovation and thought leadership.”
