Cycling: Armitstead and Pooley named part of strong UCI Road World Championships team

Lizzie Armitstead will look to add to her London 2012 silver medal-winning success next weekend as she leads Great Britain’s women at the UCI Road World Championships.

The 23-year-old will take to the roads of Limburg in the Netherlands alongside Katie Colclough, Nicole Cooke, Nikki Harris, Sharon Laws, Emma Pooley in the elite road race on Saturday 22 September, with Wendy Houvenaghel joining Pooley in the time trial on Tuesday 18 September.

The team will be hoping for a repeat of August’s road race in London on Holland’s 129km course, with great things expected from Armitstead.

“I think it’s fair to say Lizzie would be a leader in that team given how she rode at the Games,” women’s road coach Chris Newton told British Cycling.

“It was never a fluke medal. Lizzie grafted so much in that race to get that result and had the help from teammates as well but had to put in so much. I can see the form there, I can see Lizzie as one of the strongest riders we have got for that race.”

Tuesday will see the elite women’s time trial, an event in which Pooley will attempt a hat-trick of world championship medals. The 24.3km course will take riders from Eijsden/Margraten to Valkenburg.

Jessie Walker will be joined by Elinor Barker, Lucy Garner, Emily Kay and Molly Weaver in the junior road race, with Barker also stepping up for the time trial.

Championships competition begins on Monday for GB, with the junior men and under 23 men’s time trials.
