Football: FA WSL weekend round-up

Everton dropped two crucial points in their chase for second spot at the weekend when they drew with 1-1 with Doncaster at the Arriva Stadium.

Despite dominating possession, Everton fell behind to a Leandra Little effort. Unfortunately for the Blues, not even netting a contender for goal of the season was any consolation to Fara Williams, but her 25-yard chip did salvage a point.

“I’m really disappointed,” said a frustrated Williams. “In the second half we played well, but in the first half our display wasn’t acceptable.

“We have to give some credit to their goalkeeper and their defenders too. But we know we can perform better.”

Sunday’s FA WSL action also saw Birmingham City cruise to a 2-1 victory over Lincoln in their Continental Cup fixture, with Jodie Taylor firing her side into their second successive Continental Cup Final.

Taylor struck in both halves against her former club before Laura Alleway netted a late consolation for the Lady Imps.

Monday saw more Continental Cup action, with Arsenal sealing a comfortable 4-0 semi-final victory at Bristol to set up a repeat of last year’s final.

The Gunners, current holders of the trophy, will now face Birmingham City in next month’s showdown after Gemma Davison’s first-half strike and goals from Kelly Smith, Rachel Yankey and substitute Jennifer Beattie made sure of victory.
