Paralympics: GB out of archery team event

Britain’s female archers went out of the Team Recurve competition at Royal Artillery Barracks this morning, losing to Beijing silver medallists South Korea.

Britain made the quarter-finals of this event in 2008, but the new trio of of Kate Murray, Sharon Vennard and Leigh Walmsley found the no. 3 seeds in a different class, losing 188-153.

For Walmsley, a Paralympic Games debutante, it was a first taste of the power of Korean archers.

“I’ve never shot against Korea before,” she said. “Everybody knows the reputation of Korean archers. The three of us as a team seem to do really well but not today.

“There were one or two bad shots but we have an agreement between us: love means never saying you’re sorry, so nobody gets blamed.”

This morning’s defeat spells the end of London 2012 competition for Britain’s women, although not of their Paralympic ambitions, even for Murray, who will be 68 by the time of the Rio Games in 2016.

“It’s just a number, I’m going for the record as the oldest Paralympian,” she said. “That’s my plan as long as they keep me on.”
