Tennis: Robson through to next round of US Open but Watson out
Great Britain’s Laura Robson beat American Samantha Crawford at the US Open, winning the match 6-3 7-6 (8-6) and securing a second-round meeting with Kim Clijsters of Belgium.
Robson, who is currently ranked 89th in the world, won the first set comfortably but was forced to up her game in the second, after going 3-0 down to Crawford, ranked 393 in the world.
The 18-year-old forced a tie-break and recovered from going a mini-break down however, to secure her place in the second-round clash with Clijsters.
Robson told BBC Sport: “I would have been fine to play another set out there, but it’s always nice to get it done in two, and try to keep as much energy for the next match as possible.
Three-time US Open champion Clijsters will play her final Grand Slam, before she retires.Commenting on their upcoming match, Robson said:
“It’s really exciting. Ever since I’ve been on the Tour, she’s always been extremely nice to me, so it’s great to finally play her. But I’m looking to win.”
Meanwhile, fellow Briton Heather Watson was knocked out of the competition by China’s Li Na. The 2009 US junior champion lost 6-2 6-3 to the ninth seed.
Watson, who is currently ranked world number 71, began the match confidently and got a break point in the fourth game. However Li saved it before racing through the first set.
The 20-year-old then threatened a fightback in the second set when she broke to go 3-1. Li was determined though and took the next five games to close out the match.
Watson commented: “It was a high-quality match, and for me it’s gaining experience against these top players, learning to do the right things on the big points”.
Watson was more successful at the Texas Open in Dallas this weekend however, as she teamed up with New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic in the women’s doubles tournament. The pair won 6-3, 6-0 win over Latvia’s Liga Dekmeijere and American Irina Falconi.
